About Us

What is a Sankul?

Sankul (संकुल) is a premises set up in the industry 'Baroda Electric Meters Ltd.', for fresh engineering trainees, interns, undergraduates to acquire missing skills in Embedded Systems, IoT (Internet of Things), and related disciplines using an hands-on approach.

Sankul (संकुल) is a Sanskrit word that has its origins in the epics - Mahabharata (महाभारत) and the Ramayana (रामायण), where it is used to refer to 'disordered, disturbed, confused, or perplexed' and to 'thick or dense' respectively. We have chosen this name for our training centre as it appropriately characterises the nature of the participants who enrol into its training programs . We have drawn inspiration from Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, ex-Vice Chancellor, Gujarat Technological University (GTU), who had set up various Sankuls across the State of Gujarat as a platform to bridge the gap between the industries and the academia and has driven the students to opt for industrial projects in their final year of undergraduate studies.

Embedded Systems, IoT and more

Under the guidance of Dr. Vithal N. Kamat, who heads the Sankul, an undergraduate or a fresh engineering graduate, from Electrical, Electronics, Communication, Computers or Information Technology disciplines, could look forward to acquiring the missing practical skill sets to enable him/her to confidently jump-start his/her career.

Fair and Ethical Practices

The Sankul believes in fair and ethical practices. Unlike other embedded training centres that charge a training fee and exploit freshers, this Sankul, instead, offers a stipend during the training period! The stipend provides dignity and financial independence to the trainees.

The trainees are NOT asked to sign any Bond, and are free to leave anytime. The reduced work timings (6 hours) and re-designed training program make them suitable for women who wish to build their career in the field of embedded systems, IoT and related disciplines.

Diversity, Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action

The three components of Sankul's work culture towards creating equity in the workplace for its employees are (i) Embracing Diversity, (ii) Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and (iii) Affirmative Action (AA). Equity in the workplace is characterised by: (a) a diverse productive workforce, (b) a more equitable and accessible work environment, (c) an inclusive environment where all employees are valued, (d) a work environment free from discrimination, and (e) a level playing field for employee success.

Embracing Diversity refers to a comprehensive organisational and managerial process for developing an environment that maximises the potential of all employees by valuing diversity. Diversity refers to human qualities that are different from our own and those of groups to which we belong, but are manifested in other individuals and groups. Dimensions of diversity include, but are not limited to: age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital or partner status, military experience, parental status, religious beliefs, work experience and job classification. (Adapted from Workforce America! Managing Employee Diversity as a Vital Resource by Marilyn Loden and Judy B. Rosener.) Sankul is committed to sustaining such an environment.

Equal Employment Opportunity is a term used by the government to refer to employment practices that ensure nondiscrimination based on race, colour, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental ability, religion, medical condition, ancestry, marital status, pregnancy, genetic information, veteran status or age. The principle behind EEO is that everyone should have the same access to opportunities in the workplace.

Affirmative Action is one aspect of Sankul's efforts to ensure equal employment opportunity for minorities, women, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
